A runaway extreme court.
We recognize the fourth of July as the anniversary of nationhood, but at its core it's the day we said we were free people. The holiday is rooted in celebrating the inalienable rights promised to Americans at its founding, a promise not yet fully met for all but one we work towards for a just society. It's a celebration of our history, but as we head into the long weekend, many of us are thinking about our nation's present and future.
We are going into this long weekend having witnessed the threats to that promise of freedom by a runaway extreme court with a cascade of rulings that seek to deny our rights. The fall of Roe. The obstruction of gun control. The gutting of the Clean Air Act. The rollback of tribal rights. And on the horizon, the ultimate unraveling of our democracy by installing gerrymandered maps that will consolidate power of election results under GOP controlled state legislatures.
The extreme right wants our country to become a more dangerous place to live, a people with fewer rights and without the resources needed for us to thrive. We can't allow it. I am grateful to Senator Tina Smith's leadership on her stance on expanding the court - without it, our future will continue to be held hostage by extreme minority rule.
This moment we are in is a gaping wound in an infected democracy. This is not a momentary blimp on the arc of justice but this has been a slowly inflicted injury that we must acknowledge, repair, and heal. Their is no liberation, freedom, or justice until we do. Here in Minnesota, we are a bright light full of possibility: to govern to improve the lives of people, to seek progress, and to secure our own future. Our campaign is dedicated to that fight, focused on voter turnout to ensure our statewide leadership is secured: to keep Attorney General Keith Ellison in office to protect our rights, to hold Secretary of State Steve Simon to protect our elections, to re-elect State Auditor Julie Blaha to keep our government accountable, and to ensure a second term for Governor Walz who can sign into law the codification of Roe after a pro-choice majority in the Senate passes it or, at the very least, hold the line for our reproductive freedom.
This race isn't about me, it's about holding onto and advancing what we value. That's why we are investing in relational organizing and leadership development in order to build the necessary organizing power for our future. This is one tool in our toolbox to care for each other in our communities. Join us.
